Are you ready for a life-changing academic experience? Join us for an exciting five-day Graduate Summer School exploring Sociomaterial Transformation across East Asia, held in Beijing from June 22–26, 2026.
Hosted by the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), in partnership with Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University (THU), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and the Institute of Science Tokyo (IST), this program is part of the SoMaT project, funded by the INTPART program of the Research Council of Norway.Through a humanities-based Science & Technology Studies (STS) framework, we will look into three pressing thematic areas: Sustainability, Digitalization, and Diversity.What awaits you?

Program OutlineDay 1 – Introductions & foundationsGet to know your peers and explore key concepts of sociomateriality through case studies from China, Japan, Korea, and Norway.Day 2 – Study with international PhD candidatesJoin the SoMaT PhD School at Tsinghua University, and dive deeper into STS, culture and diversity perspectives with lectures and seminars focused on empirical topics within the Chinese context.Day 3 – Field visits along with international PhD candidatesChoose one site to visit and observe sociomaterial transformation firsthand:
A fully automated car factory
A sustainable office building
A Hutong neighborhood under renovation
A former industrial steel site
Day 4 – Group workCollaborate with your team to analyse field observations and prepare a fieldwork report.Day 5 – Presentation & exchangeShare your findings in a final presentation and engage in cross-cultural dialogue with fellow participants.Who should apply?This Summer School is designed primarily for Master’s students in Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), including but not limited to:

Capacity: Limited to 25 participants.
Financial Support: Flights and accommodation will be covered.
Arrival & Departure: Participants should arrive in Beijing by June 21 and may depart from June 27. Registration will take place on June 21.
